Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 4.Bg5 develops with a threat to trade on f6, and Qd2 with long castling follows in the engine line.
  • f3 breaks at e4 at once; after ...e5 and the queen trade, White's king walks back to e1.
  • g4 is a thematic lever against f5, opening lines toward Black's king after preparation.
  • Bc4 points at g8 and e6, the light squares that ...f5 loosened.

Black

  • Develop with ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...Bb4 to pressure c3 and keep e4 defended.
  • ...e5 strikes the center if White plays f3, steering for an endgame where e4 still stands.
  • ...c6 and ...Qa5 can pin the c3 knight and slow down White's long castling.

Plans and pawn structure

The f5 pawn gives Black a firm hold on e4 but leaves e5 and e6 weak and the a2-g8 diagonal open. White develops with Bg5, Qd2 and O-O-O, then plays f3 or g4 to break the pawn chain. Black wants ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...Bb4, castling short only when the kingside is safe. If White gets the queens off early, Black keeps the e4 pawn but has a slightly loose structure.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it

Play 4.Bg5 and continue with Qd2 and long castling. Your pieces develop fast, and the bishop removes Black's main defender of e4 if it lands on f6. Do not rush f3 before development, and remember that White scores 56.9% overall here, so the normal setup works well.
