  3. French Defense

  4. Scandinavian Defense

    1.e4 d5

1.e4 d5 forces the issue on move one. After exd5 Black recaptures with the queen or first plays ...Nf6, and the structure stays simple. 5. Nimzo-Indian Defense

    1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4

How we ranked Black's options

Black starts a tempo behind, so we did not expect scores above 50%. Instead we looked for openings where Black stays close to even in our September 2025 lichess sample across the four rating bands, and where Stockfish 17.1 at depth 20 keeps White's edge small. Gambits with big engine numbers were left out even when they scored well in one band. The Latvian Gambit scores 54.1% in the 1600-1999 band from only 1145 games, but its engine reading of 1.51 means White is clearly better with correct play.

Matching the defense to your style

Black's choice is mostly about how much imbalance you want. The Sicilian and Grünfeld create sharp, unequal positions where both sides have chances. The Caro-Kann, Slav and French keep the pawns firm and the game slower. The Scandinavian and Nimzo-Indian sit in the middle: clear structures, but with early piece play.

Short on study time? Pair two defenses built on the same idea. The Caro-Kann and Slav both use the c-pawn to hold d5, so plans and piece placement carry over from one to the other.

Three Black repertoires

For a fighter: the Sicilian Defense against 1.e4 and the Grünfeld Defense against 1.d4 when White plays c4 and Nc3. For a solid player: the Caro-Kann Defense and the Slav Defense. For a counterpuncher: the French Defense and the Nimzo-Indian Defense, which share the ...e6 move and a fight against White's e4 push.

Whatever you pick, learn one reply to each main White system first and add depth only where your games keep going.

Common mistakes with Black

The most common one is playing only for equality. Black openings are built to create counterplay, and a waiting move like ...h6 or ...a6 with no purpose hands White time. Another is copying White's moves for too long in symmetrical openings: the Petrov's Defense scores 45.7% for Black under 1200, where copying White with an early ...Nxe4 can walk into a pin on the e-file. Finally, avoid offbeat replies that give White the center for free, like the Owen Defense at 0.88.

Questions

What is the best defense for Black?

Against 1.e4, the Sicilian Defense gives Black the best mix of soundness and winning chances, with 50.7% in the under 1200 and 1200-1599 bands. Against 1.d4, the Nimzo-Indian has the smallest engine edge for White on our list at 0.18.

What is the most solid opening for Black?

The Caro-Kann against 1.e4 and the Slav against 1.d4. Both defend d5 with the c-pawn and keep the light-squared bishop active, which leaves Black with few long-term weaknesses.

Why do most Black openings score under 50%?

White moves first and gets a small lead in development. In our sample even the best Black openings sit between 48% and 50%, so a score in that range means the defense is doing its job.

Can I play the same defense against everything?

Partly. A ...g6 setup like the Modern Defense can be used against both 1.e4 and 1.d4, but the engine reads the Modern at 0.59 after 1.e4. Most players do better with one defense for each first move.
