Best Defenses Against 1.e4

The best defenses against 1.e4 are the Sicilian Defense for winning chances, the Caro-Kann and French for solidity, and 1...e5 lines such as the Two Knights and Petrov for classical play. The Scandinavian and Pirc are good low-theory choices that still score close to even in our lichess sample.

  1. Sicilian Defense

    1.e4 c5

The 1...c5 reply is the most common answer to 1.e4 in our sample by a wide margin, 391169 games, and the results justify it: 50.7% for Black in both lower bands and 48.8% at 2000+. White usually opens the position with d4, Black takes with ...cxd4, and the game splits into many systems. Black's main plans use the half-open c-file and the ...d5 break.

  2. Caro-Kann Defense

    1.e4 c6

1...c6 prepares ...d5 so that Black can meet exd5 with ...cxd5 and keep a pawn in the center. The defense posts 50.1% under 1200 and 49.8% in the 1600-1999 band, and the engine gives White only 0.31. Quick attacks against it are rare, because Black's king and pawn cover stay intact. Choose it if you would rather defend a sound position than chase complications.

  3. French Defense

    1.e4 e6

1...e6 builds a wall on e6 and d5 and invites White to push e5. Then Black attacks the chain at its base with ...c5 and later ...f6. Across 253335 games Black scores 49.4% under 1200 and 48.4% at 2000+. The 62 variation pages split into a few big systems, so learn one answer each to e5, exd5 and Nc3.

  4. Scandinavian Defense

    1.e4 d5

1...d5 puts the question to e4 straight away. After the exchange Black develops quickly with ...Nf6, ...Bf5 or ...Bg4, and ...c6. The engine reads 0.57, more than the Sicilian or Caro-Kann, yet Black scores 49.4% in the 1600-1999 band in 77658 games. With 25 variation pages it is the quickest of the main defenses to learn.

  5. Two Knights Defense

    1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6

If you prefer 1...e5, the Two Knights is the active way to meet the Italian. Against 3.Bc4 Black plays 3...Nf6 and hits e4 instead of guarding. Stockfish rates it at 0.18. Black's score climbs with rating, from 44.8% under 1200 to 49% at 2000+, which shows it rewards study of the Ng5 lines against f7.

How to beat the Two Knights Defense

  6. Petrov's Defense

    1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6

1...e5 and 2...Nf6 answer the knight's attack on e5 with a counterattack on e4. It is a defense built for safety: engine reading 0.37, 12 variation pages, and Black scores 48.6% at 2000+. Lower down it is less effective, 45.7% under 1200, because a single copied move in a symmetrical position can be punished. It suits players who want a sound, quiet game with few early tactics to memorize.

How to beat the Petrov's Defense

  7. Pirc Defense

    1.e4 d6

1...d6 followed by ...Nf6 and ...g6 lets White build a big center, then challenges it with ...e5 or ...c5. Black's score is steady from 48.5% under 1200 to 49.1% at 2000+, though the engine reading of 0.51 shows White gets extra space. Only 10 variation pages cover it. It suits players who know their setup well and like counterpunching.

How we ranked the replies

We took every common reply to 1.e4 in our lichess sample from September 2025 and compared Black's score in each of four rating bands. Each starting position was then checked with Stockfish 17.1 at depth 20, and replies with a large engine edge for White dropped down the list. Variation counts told us how much each one asks you to learn.

Notice how flat the top results are: the Sicilian, Caro-Kann and French all sit within one point of each other overall. At that level, the right choice depends on you, not on the numbers.

1...e5 or a semi-open defense?

Answering 1.e4 with 1...e5 leads to open games such as the Italian, Ruy Lopez and Scotch, where both sides develop fast and tactics come early. You need answers to several White systems, but the positions teach sound habits. Semi-open defenses like the Sicilian, French and Caro-Kann change the pawn structure on move one, so the game takes its shape sooner and you meet your own plans more often.

If you play a lot of bullet or blitz, the Scandinavian is attractive because White has fewer ways to avoid your preparation.

Pair your main defense with a plan B

Have a main defense and a surprise weapon that needs little work. A Caro-Kann player can switch to the Scandinavian Defense, since both lead to positions where Black's light-squared bishop develops outside the pawn chain. A Sicilian player who wants a quieter game can use the French Defense. Before a game, read the guides written from White's side to see what your opponent aims for, for example how to beat the Caro-Kann.

Replies to avoid

Some answers to 1.e4 score acceptably in fast games but give away too much against good preparation. The Latvian Gambit weakens Black's king and sits at 1.51 by engine, and the Elephant Gambit at 1.01. Black scores 44.2% with the Latvian under 1200 and 46.2% with the Elephant, so they fail at the very level where people hope they work. The Owen Defense, at 0.88, is less risky but still hands White the center.
