The Best Chess Openings
The best chess openings for most players are the Italian Game, Ruy Lopez and Scotch Game after 1.e4, the English or a 1.d4 system with White, and the Sicilian, Caro-Kann or French with Black. Each one is sound by engine and holds its score across every rating band in our sample.
-
Italian Game
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4
The Italian asks for 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4, then a slow build with c3, d3 and castling before White picks the moment for a d4 break. White scores 53% under 1200 and 52% in the 1600-1999 band across 206003 games, and Stockfish gives it 0.18 pawns. With 29 variation pages it is a full opening, but the plans repeat from game to game. It suits players who want classical development and a steady edge.
-
Ruy Lopez
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5
3.Bb5 puts pressure on the c6 knight, the piece that guards e5, so White's threat grows slowly over many moves. The score is flat and healthy: 53.5% under 1200, 53.3% in both middle bands and 52.7% at 2000+. The cost is depth, with 37 variation pages and long maneuvering middlegames. Pick it if you enjoy long games and plan to keep improving one opening over time.
-
Scotch Game
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4
With 3.d4 White opens the center on move three and trades off the e5 pawn at once. That directness pays: White scores 54.5% overall in 92540 games, the best figure among the open games on this list, and still 54.8% in the 1200-1599 band. Positions open fast, so piece activity matters more than memorized move orders. It fits players who like clear, open games.
-
English Opening
1.c4
1.c4 fights for d5 from the side and lets White choose the structure later. White scores 53.2% overall over 116649 games and 53.5% in the 1600-1999 band, and Stockfish puts it at 0.18. Black can reply in many ways, which is why the family has 41 variation pages, but a setup with Nc3, g3 and Bg2 stays the same against most of them. It suits patient players who like maneuvering.
-
Queen's Pawn Game (1.d4 sidelines)
1.d4
This family covers 1.d4 without an early c4: London-style setups and other systems where White builds the same structure each game. White scores 53.1% in the 1200-1599, 1600-1999 and 2000+ bands alike, across 362182 games, with only 18 variation pages to study. It is the low-maintenance way to open with the queen's pawn, and it suits players who are short on study time.
-
Sicilian Defense
1.e4 c5
1.e4 c5 trades symmetry for imbalance: Black gives White central space but gets a half-open c-file and active counterplay once the c-pawn trades for White's d-pawn. In our sample of 391169 games Black scores 50.7% in each of the two lowest bands, a rare even result for the second player. The price is theory, with 113 variation pages, the most of any opening here. Choose it if you want to play for a win with Black.
-
Caro-Kann Defense
1.e4 c6
1.e4 c6 prepares ...d5 with a pawn behind it and keeps the c8 bishop free to develop outside the pawn chain. Black's results are 50.1% under 1200 and 50.5% one band up, then 47.9% at 2000+, where White's preparation tells more. The engine reading is 0.31 and the theory is moderate at 41 variation pages. It suits solid players who like sound pawn structures and calm middlegames.
-
French Defense
1.e4 e6
1.e4 e6 followed by ...d5 builds a firm chain, then attacks White's center with ...c5 and sometimes ...f6. Over 253335 games Black holds 49.9% in the 1600-1999 band and 50.1% just below it. The c8 bishop can stay passive behind the e6 pawn, and 62 variation pages show how many systems White can choose. It suits players who like to counterattack a fixed center.
How we chose these openings
We started from every opening family with enough games in our lichess sample from September 2025, then ran each starting position through Stockfish 17.1 at depth 20. An opening made this list only if the engine rates it as sound for the side choosing it and that side holds its score across all four rating bands: under 1200, 1200-1599, 1600-1999 and 2000+. We then weighed how much theory each one carries, using the number of variation pages we have for it.
Search interest did not decide anything. A popular opening with a poor engine reading, such as the Englund Gambit at 1.31 pawns in White's favor, stays off the list no matter how often people look it up.
How to pick between them
Start with how you like to win. If you enjoy tactics and open files, play the Scotch or Italian with White and the Sicilian with Black. If you prefer a calm build and a long fight, the Ruy Lopez, the English and the Caro-Kann fit better. If you have little time to study, choose a system with few variation pages, like the 1.d4 setups in the Queen's Pawn Game, and learn its plans instead of its lines.
Time control matters too. In fast games the opening you know well beats the one with the best score on paper, because one forgotten move costs more than a small edge in the statistics.
A starter repertoire from this list
A complete repertoire needs one White opening and two Black replies, one against 1.e4 and one against 1.d4. A balanced choice: the Italian Game with White, the Caro-Kann Defense against 1.e4, and the Queen's Gambit Declined against 1.d4. The last one scores lower for Black, 45.7% overall, but its structure is simple and its engine reading of 0.24 shows Black is close to level.
When an opponent uses one of these openings against you, read the matching guide, such as how to beat the Sicilian, so you know their usual plans before the next game.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not switch openings after every loss. A loss usually comes from a middlegame error, not from the first five moves. Do not judge an opening by one band either: the Scandinavian Defense scores 47.5% for Black under 1200 but 49.6% at 2000+, so it rewards players who know its plans. Finally, avoid memorizing long lines you do not understand. If you cannot say why a move is played, you will not find the right plan when your opponent leaves the main line.
Questions
What is the best chess opening?
No single opening is best for everyone. For White, the Italian Game, Ruy Lopez and Scotch Game are sound and win more than half the points in every rating band of our sample. For Black, the Sicilian Defense and Caro-Kann Defense hold close to an even score against 1.e4.
Which opening scores best for White?
The Scotch Game posts the highest overall White score among the open games on this list, 54.5% in 92540 games. The Italian Game is a close alternative with more room for slow plans, and the English Opening suits players who prefer 1.c4.
Which opening is the most solid for Black?
The Caro-Kann and French are the most solid replies to 1.e4 here, with engine readings of 0.31 and 0.32 pawns. Both put a pawn on d5 and accept a little less space in exchange for a stable structure.
Do I need to learn a lot of theory?
Not at first. Learn the opening moves of your main line and the typical plans that follow them. Families with fewer variation pages, such as the 1.d4 systems with 18 pages, are easier to keep up with.
