Queen's Gambit Declined
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6
After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 Black keeps a pawn on d5 and plans ...Nf6, ...Be7 and castling, followed by ...c5 or ...dxc4 to free the game. The score looks low, 45.7% overall in 105431 games, but Stockfish reads just 0.24 and the result climbs to 46.3% at 2000+. With 36 variation pages it is the standard defense to learn properly.
-
Slav Defense
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6
2...c6 holds d5 without blocking the c8 bishop, which can come to f5 or g4 before Black plays ...e6. The engine gives 0.3. Black scores 47.5% under 1200 and 47.4% in the 1600-1999 band, a touch better than the Declined at most levels. It is the natural partner for Caro-Kann players, and 16 variation pages make it a manageable study.
-
Nimzo-Indian Defense
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4
When White plays 2.c4 and 3.Nc3, 3...Bb4 pins the knight and fights for e4 with pieces rather than pawns. This defense has the lowest engine reading on this list, 0.18. Black's results rise with rating, from 46.7% in the 1200-1599 band to 49% at 2000+. White can sidestep it with 3.Nf3, so you also need a plan there.
-
Grünfeld Defense
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5
Against 2.c4 and 3.Nc3, the move 3...d5 invites White to take on d5 and build a pawn center with e4, which Black then attacks with ...c5 and the g7 bishop. Black scores 49.8% overall, one of the best results for Black against 1.d4 in our sample, though the 6634 games make it a smaller sample. Expect concrete, sharp positions and 11 variation pages of lines.
-
Semi-Slav Defense
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 combines the Slav and Declined ideas: a solid pawn triangle on c6, d5 and e6, with ...dxc4 and ...b5 always in the air. The engine reads 0.25. Black scores 46.1% under 1200 and 46.4% at 2000+, very stable across ratings. It can turn sharp quickly, so it suits players willing to study 12 variation pages carefully.
-
Dutch Defense
1.d4 f5
1...f5 stakes a claim to e4 with a pawn and prepares a kingside attack with ...Nf6, ...e6 or ...g6, and later ...Qe8 and ...Qh5. The cost is a looser king; Stockfish reads 0.52. Black scores 49% in the 1600-1999 band over 10158 games, close to even. It fits attacking players who want to avoid the main Queen's Gambit lines.
-
Benoni Defense
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 asks White to push d5 and gain space, and Black answers with ...e6, ...exd5, ...g6 and a queenside pawn majority. The engine reading of 0.64 is the highest among these picks, but Black scores 49.8% at 2000+ and 49.3% in both middle bands. It suits players who calculate well and want winning chances against 1.d4.
How we chose these defenses
Defending against 1.d4 is mostly about the Queen's Gambit, so we grouped the replies by how Black handles 2.c4. For each one we pulled Black's score in four rating bands from our September 2025 lichess sample and checked the starting position with Stockfish 17.1 at depth 20. We favored defenses with a small engine edge for White and stable scores, and used the variation count as a guide to study load.
The Queen's Gambit Declined at 45.7% looks weak on results alone, but its engine reading of 0.24 is among the smallest on this list. Results tell you what is hard in practice; the engine tells you what is sound.
Classical or Indian?
Classical defenses answer with 1...d5 and fight for the center with pawns. The Declined, Slav and Semi-Slav give clear structures and a long, strategic game. Indian defenses start with 1...Nf6 and wait to see White's setup: the Nimzo-Indian uses pieces to control e4, the Grünfeld lets White build a center and then attacks it, and the Benoni creates an imbalance right away. Choose classical if you value structure, Indian if you value flexibility.
Build a main defense and a backup
Pick one main defense and one backup from a different family, so White cannot steer every game into a single prepared line. Solid pair: the Slav Defense as your main answer and the Nimzo-Indian Defense as the backup. Sharper pair: the Dutch Defense and the Benoni Defense.
If White plays a system without c4, such as the London, you need a separate plan; our 1...Nf6 sidelines hub covers those positions. Before facing a regular opponent, read how White plays against the Declined to see the plans you will meet.
Defenses that cost too much
The Englund Gambit draws a lot of interest, 4400 searches a month, but it gives a pawn for little: the engine reads 1.31 and Black scores 44.8% at 2000+. The Albin Countergambit is sounder at 0.75 but still scores 43.5% under 1200. The Queen's Gambit Accepted is sound, yet Black scores only 43.7% overall, and the usual error is trying to keep the extra pawn on c4 with ...b5. Give it back and develop.
Questions
What is the best defense against 1.d4?
The Nimzo-Indian is the soundest by engine at 0.18, but it needs White to play 2.c4 and 3.Nc3. For a defense that works against almost every White setup, the Queen's Gambit Declined and Slav are the most reliable choices.
What is the most aggressive defense to 1.d4?
The Dutch and Benoni are the most combative sound options. The Dutch fights for e4 with 1...f5, and the Benoni scores 49.8% at 2000+ despite an engine reading of 0.64.
Is the Englund Gambit good?
No. Stockfish rates it at 1.31 in White's favor, and Black scores 46.7% with it under 1200 and 44.8% at 2000+. It wins games only when White falls for a trap.
Should I answer 1.d4 with 1...d5 or 1...Nf6?
1...d5 is simpler and leads to Queen's Gambit structures. 1...Nf6 keeps more options open and can lead to the Nimzo-Indian, Grünfeld or Benoni, but you need answers to more White systems.
