Key ideas for both sides
White
- If Black plays ...dxc4, Qa4+ or a quick Nf3 and Qc2 regains the pawn while the g2 bishop stares at b7.
- Against 4...Bb4+, block with 5.Nd2. The knight supports a later e4 and avoids trading the dark bishop.
- After 4...c5, take on d5 and play Nf3 and Ne5, pressing the isolated or hanging pawns.
- Keep the option of Nf3 versus a knight on e2 open until Black shows a setup.
Black
- ...dxc4 grabs the pawn. Follow up with ...a6 and ...b5 or ...Nc6 to make White work to regain it.
- The engine's 4...Bb4+ forces a decision. After 5.Nd2, ...O-O, ...b6 and ...Bb7 contest the long diagonal.
- 4...Be7 heads for the Closed Catalan, keeping d5 and a calm structure.
- 4...c5 strikes at d4 at once but leaves Black with an isolated pawn after cxd5 exd5.
Plans and pawn structure
The key question is what Black does with the d5 pawn. If Black takes on c4, White spends a few moves regaining it with Qa4+ or Qc2, and Black uses that time to develop and free the c8 bishop. If Black keeps d5, White builds with Nf3, short castling and Qc2, then pushes e4. The check on b4 tries to trade dark bishops or misplace the d2 knight. Either way, White's g2 bishop decides how much pressure Black feels on b7.

How to play against it
As Black, choose a system before move four. Taking on c4 is the most active choice. Keep the pawn only with ...a6 and ...b5, not with weakening pawn moves. If you prefer calm, play ...Be7 and castle. Do not leave b7 undefended once the long diagonal opens.

What is the main idea of the Catalan Opening: Open Defense?

What should Black play next?
The engine's first choice is Bb4+, with Be7 and c5 close behind. 4...Bb4+ makes White block with Nd2 before Nf3, taking away White's most natural development square for that knight.
