The Berger Variation of the Center Game is 4...Nf6, attacking the e4 pawn right after White's queen retreats to e3. White must defend e4 and finish development, often with long castling, while Black uses ...Bb4, ...O-O and ...d5 to open the center against the queen.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Defend e4 with 5.Nc3. If ...Bb4 follows, a3 forces a trade and Qxc3 keeps the queen active.
- 5.Bd2 is the other main try: it unpins a future knight on c3 and prepares long castling.
- After ...d5, answer with exd5 and trade knights on d5 rather than leaving the queen exposed on the e-file.
- f3 can bolster e4, as in the top engine line, but it costs development.
Black
- Pin with ...Bb4 so a white knight on c3 cannot defend e4 comfortably, and take on c3 when it helps.
- Castle short, then put a rook on e8. The queen on e3 stands on that file.
- Strike with ...d5 to open lines while the white king is still on e1.
- After trades on d5, Black's queen recaptures centrally and Black has the easier development.
Plans and pawn structure
The knight on f6 and a coming ...d5 make e4 a constant target. White's best setup is Nc3, Bd2 and long castling, which puts the rook on d1 facing Black's d-pawn. Black castles short, plays ...Re8 to line up against the queen on e3, and breaks with ...d5. If White castles long, both sides can attack: White with g4 and h4, Black with ...a5 and pieces aimed at the queenside. Black is a little more comfortable because the white queen keeps getting hit.

How to play against it
As White, guard e4 right away with Nc3 or Bd2 and do not grab material. Get the king off the e-file quickly, ideally with long castling. Do not allow ...Re8 and ...d5 while your queen and king both sit on the e-file.
