Queen's Pawn Game: Colle System, Grünfeld Formation
The Grünfeld Formation against the Colle is 3...g6 4.Bd3 Bg7, where Black fianchettoes the dark bishop behind the d5 pawn. White's Bd3 now hits a solid wall, so White usually adds c4 or b4, while Black aims for ...c5 and pressure on d4.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- 5.c4 changes plans: Nc3 and short castling, with pressure on d5 instead of a Colle e4 push.
- 5.b4 grabs queenside space and prepares Bb2 to oppose the g7 bishop on the long diagonal.
- If Black plays ...c5 and ...cxd4, recapture with exd4 to keep a pawn on d4 and open e-file play.
- Do not rely on Bd3 attacking h7. The g6 pawn blocks that diagonal.
Black
- Strike with ...c5, the main break, so the g7 bishop aims straight at d4.
- Castle short and develop with ...Nc6 to add a second attacker on d4.
- Against b4, play ...Nbd7 and ...b6, then ...c5 to open the b-file.
- Use ...Bf5 or ...Be6 to trade off or blunt White's d3 bishop.
Plans and pawn structure
The fianchetto changes the usual Colle story. White's usual kingside attack against h7 does not work behind the g6 pawn, so the fight moves to the center and queenside. Black castles and pushes ...c5, often with ...cxd4 and ...Nc6 to target an isolated d4 pawn. White can choose c4 and Nc3 for central pressure, or b4 and Bb2 to fight the g7 bishop. Black scored well in our sample, partly because the d3 bishop has little to hit.

How to play against it
As White, give the d3 bishop a new job: play c4 to challenge d5 or b4 and Bb2 to contest the long diagonal. After ...c5, decide early whether to keep the tension or recapture on d4. Do not play the standard Colle e4 push without preparation.
