Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 3.Nf3 and g3 aim for a calm setup with Bg2 and short castling, waiting to see Black's structure.
  • 3.g3 goes straight for the fianchetto and keeps the Leningrad and Stonewall options for both sides.
  • 3.Nc3 adds a piece to the e4 fight and prepares an early e4 push.
  • Against ...e6 and ...d5, aim at e5 with a knight and use cxd5 to open the c-file.

Black

  • 3...e6 heads for Stonewall or classical setups. The engine lines show ...Be7, ...O-O and ...d5.
  • ...g6 transposes to a Leningrad against White's g3, with ...Bg7, ...d6 and an ...e5 break.
  • The f6 knight can jump to e4 when supported by f5 and d5 or after a bishop check on b4.
  • Castle quickly before White's g2 bishop and e4 push open the center.

Plans and pawn structure

Black's knight on f6 and pawn on f5 control e4, and both sides build around that square. White's best long-term plan is to win e4 with Nc3, Qc2 and the e4 push, or to occupy e5 with a knight if Black plays ...d5. Black chooses the pawn shape: ...e6 and ...d5 for a Stonewall, ...d6 and ...e5 for classical play, or ...g6 for a Leningrad. Each setup has its own holes, and White aims at whichever squares Black leaves behind.

How to play against it

As White, continue with Nf3 or g3 and get the bishop to g2 before deciding on Nc3. Do not push e4 too early; prepare it with Qc2 and Nc3. Watch for ...Ne4 if Black gets a knight there with pawn support.
