Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Push e5 to drive the f6 knight back to g8, then follow with Nf3 and d4 for a space edge.
  • After ...d5 cxd5 exd5, the e5 push and exf6 lead to sharp tactics, including a Bb5+ check.
  • Against ...e5, consider f4 and a kingside setup, as in a King's Gambit or Vienna style position.

Black

  • Play ...c5 so that after e5 and ...Ng8, Black can hit d4 with ...Nc6 and ...cxd4.
  • Try ...d5 to challenge e4 at once, accepting sharp play after cxd5 exd5 e5.
  • Keep the knight's retreat in mind; a passive ...Be7 lets White play e5 and d4 for free.

Plans and pawn structure

White's pawns on c4 and e4 claim d5, and the e5 push gains time against the f6 knight. If Black answers with ...c5, the game often turns into an Open Sicilian-type structure after d4 cxd4 Nxd4, with White ahead in space. With ...d5, play opens fast and both kings need care. Black's long-term trumps are the c5 and d5 levers against White's broad center; White's are space and a lead in development.

How to play against it

For Black: don't play slowly. Answer 3.e4 with ...c5 or ...d5 so the center does not settle in White's favor. After e5, retreat the knight to g8 calmly and hit d4 with ...Nc6 and ...cxd4. Avoid moves that leave the f6 knight with no good square when e5 comes.
