Key ideas for both sides
White
- Open the center with d4, the engine's choice, and after ...exd4 recapture with the knight for free development.
- Pin the c6 knight with Bb5 and castle quickly, then play d3 and Bg5 for slow pressure.
- Use the quiet a3 or g3 setups to avoid theory and keep a flexible pawn structure.
- Against ...Bb4, Nxc6 and Bd3 or Qd4 ideas fight for the center and the bishop pair.
Black
- Pin the c3 knight with ...Bb4 and play ...d5 or ...O-O to hit e4.
- Against Bb5, the Rubinstein ...Nd4 trades a pair of knights and frees Black's game.
- In the Scotch lines, take on d4 and develop with ...Bb4 and ...d5 for active play.
- Copy White with ...Bb4 against Bb5 in the Double Spanish for a safe, symmetrical game.
Plans and pawn structure
In the Scotch Four Knights, the center opens after d4 and ...exd4. White uses the knight on d4 and plays Nxc6 and Bd3, while Black pins with ...Bb4 and breaks with ...d5. In the Spanish lines, both sides castle, play d3 or ...d6 and maneuver; Bg5 pins and ...Nd4 trades are common. In the quiet a3 or g3 lines, White keeps the structure flexible and plays d3 and Be2 or Bg2 before choosing a plan.
What the Four Knights Game is about
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 all four knights are out and the center is symmetrical. Both sides have defended their e-pawns with knights. White now chooses the kind of game: an open center with d4, a Spanish-style pin with Bb5, or a quiet setup with a3, g3 or h3.
From this position White scored 51.9% across 58525 games. The engine sees the three top moves, 4.d4, 4.h3 and 4.Bb5, as close to level. Its main line runs 4.d4 exd4 5.Nxd4 Bb4 6.Nxc6 bxc6 7.Bd3 d5. The Four Knights has a reputation for being dull, but its lines are full of good, healthy chess, and it is a fine place for club players to learn open-game ideas.
The main variations
The Italian Variation, reached by 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3, is the most played line in the packet, with 25675 games. The bishop on c4 aims at f7, and Black's ...Nxe4 trick is a key resource, as in the Noa Gambit with Bxf7+.
The Spanish Variation, 4.Bb5, pins the c6 knight. Black's best-known answers are the Rubinstein ...Nd4, the Classical ...Bc5 and the Double Spanish ...Bb4. The engine sees the Spanish as level.
The Scotch Variation, 4.d4, is the engine's first choice. After 4...exd4 we reach the Scotch Variation Accepted, where White scored 54.6%.
The Halloween Gambit, 4.Nxe5, gives a knight for two pawns and a big center. The engine shows a large edge for Black, so this is a dubious gambit. It can still work against unprepared players.
The Gunsberg Variation, 4.a3, and the Glek System, 4.g3, are quiet choices. White avoids ...Bb4 pins and theory.
Typical plans for White
In the Scotch lines White opens the center and uses the knight on d4. After ...Bb4, the trade Nxc6 and the move Bd3 keep the e4 pawn safe. White castles and plays Bg5 or Qf3 with active pieces.
- In the Spanish, castle, play d3 and use Bg5 to pin the f6 knight. Ne2 and Ng3 can bring a knight toward the kingside.
- Against ...Nd4 in the Spanish, the bishop retreats to a4 or c4 and White keeps the tension.
- In the a3 or g3 setups, White plays d3, Be2 or Bg2, and O-O, then looks for d4 or f4 later.
White should not expect a big edge. The goal is a comfortable position with slightly more space.
Typical plans for Black
Black's plans are simple: pin, trade and break. ...Bb4 pins the c3 knight and hits e4. ...Nd4 trades a pair of knights in the Spanish. ...d5 opens the center once the king is castled.
- In the Scotch lines, ...Bb4 and ...d5 free Black's game. If White plays Nxc6, recapture with the b-pawn to support ...d5.
- In the Spanish, the Double Spanish with ...Bb4 and ...O-O is safe, while the Rubinstein ...Nd4 is more ambitious.
- Against the Halloween Gambit, take the knight and return a pawn if needed to finish development.
Mistakes club players make
- Black panicking against the Halloween Gambit. After 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 the knight is chased, but Black is a piece up. Find safe squares, develop and castle.
- White playing the Halloween Gambit without understanding it. The engine shows a large edge for Black; it is a surprise weapon, not a sound line.
- Black copying White too long. In symmetrical Spanish lines, copying can lead into pins that White breaks first.
- Black forgetting the ...Nxe4 trick. In the Italian lines, ...Nxe4 and ...d5 is a known way to free the game.
- White trading on c6 without a plan. Bxc6 gives Black the bishop pair; do it only when it gains time or damages the pawns.
Who should play it
The Four Knights suits White players who want a solid, flexible opening with little theory. It also works well as a learning opening: the moves are natural and the plans are easy to understand.
For Black, it is an easy line to meet. Know one answer to 4.Bb5 and one answer to 4.d4, and keep the Halloween Gambit in mind. Players with either color who like long, maneuvering games will feel at home here.
