Key ideas for both sides
White
- If Black takes on d4, develop with 5.Bd3, O-O and Re1 instead of rushing to recapture; e5 and the lead in development are the payment.
- Against 4...Nc6, 5.c3 returns to normal Advance French structures with the full d4-e5 chain.
- Nbd2 and Nb3 can win the d4 pawn back later, once the kingside is safe.
Black
- 4...cxd4 is the engine's top move: Black takes a pawn and develops with ...Nc6 and ...Nge7.
- Aim the e7-knight at g6 to attack e5; after Re1, ...Ng6 still adds pressure.
- 4...Nc6 or 4...Bd7 keeps things standard; after 5.c3 Black reaches the usual chain structures.
Plans and pawn structure
If Black grabs on d4, the chain loses its base, and the e5 pawn becomes the target of ...Ng6, ...Qc7 and ...f6. White uses the time to castle, put a rook on e1 and win d4 back with Nb3 or Nxd4 when it is safe. If White regains the pawn with pieces active, the game is level. If not, Black is simply a healthy pawn up.

How to play against it
Take on d4 with 4...cxd4; White's c-pawn is still on c2, so nothing recaptures right away. Then develop with ...Nc6, ...Nge7 and ...Ng6, and keep ...f6 in mind to hit e5. Avoid opening the position before you have castled, since Re1 and Bd3 aim straight at your king.
