Key ideas for both sides
White
- Answer ...Nc6 with e5 and Nf3, keeping space and hoping for a later d4.
- After ...d4, play Nf3, g3 and a bishop to g2, aiming at the light squares Black left.
- Use the b2 bishop against g7 and e5 once Black's kingside knight leaves g8.
- The f4 push, as in the third engine line, supports e5 and gains kingside space.
Black
- 3...Nc6 develops and adds pressure on e4 and d4, the engine's top choice.
- Push ...d4 to close the b2 bishop's diagonal; ...c5 and ...Nc6 support the pawn.
- The queen can come to d5 and then check on e4 once White's e-pawn advances, as in the first engine line.
- ...Ne7 and ...Nbc6 build a flexible setup that keeps the light bishop free.
Plans and pawn structure
Black often keeps the center closed with ...d4, after which White's b2 bishop hits a wall and White switches to a King's Indian setup with d3, g3 and Bg2. If White pushes e5, Black answers ...d4 and gets a strong queen route through d5 to e4. White's main hope is kingside space with f4 and pressure down the long diagonal. Black is comfortable in all engine lines.

As Black, play 3...Nc6 or 3...a6 and follow with ...d4 to block the bishop. Taking on e4 is possible but gives White the development lead it wants. Keep your knights flexible, push ...c5 to support d4, and only then think about the light-squared bishop.
