Key ideas for both sides
White
- Meet 2...d5 with 3.exd5 and d4, reaching a symmetrical Exchange structure with an extra developed knight.
- Against 2...c5, play 3.d4 and Nxd4 for an Open Sicilian with ...e6 already in.
- Use d3, g3 and a bishop to g2 if you prefer a King's Indian Attack setup.
- Push e5 later to gain space if Black's pieces are slow to challenge the center.
Black
- 2...d5 hits e4 and steers toward French structures where the knight on f3 blocks White's f-pawn.
- 2...c5 transposes to Sicilian positions, so it suits players who also play the Sicilian.
- Develop ...Nf6 and ...c5 after the d-pawn trade, as the engine line does.
- An early ...a6, the third engine line, keeps options open but lets White push e5 with gain of space.
Plans and pawn structure
2.Nf3 rarely keeps its own identity: it usually transposes to the Exchange French, the Two Knights Variation, the King's Indian Attack or an Open Sicilian. The key point is that the knight on f3 rules out the f4 push, so White plays for central control and piece play rather than a pawn storm. Black chooses the structure with the second move and should pick one they know well.
Where the engine's main line heads: Symmetrical center: d4 against d5, open e-file. A symmetrical center: d4 against d5 with an open e-file. Neither side has pawn weaknesses, so piece activity decides.

How to play against it
As Black, 2...d5 is the most natural: after 3.exd5 exd5 4.d4 you have an easy game with a free c8 bishop. If you also play the Sicilian, 2...c5 is fine. Avoid waiting moves that let White grab space with e5 and d4 for free.
