Key ideas for both sides
White
- Follow with Nf3 and Rc1, as the top engine line shows, adding pressure on the c-file and c7.
- e3 props up d4 and keeps the f4 bishop outside the pawn chain.
- After ...dxc4, push e4 to grab the center while Black's pawn sits on c4.
- Watch for ...c5 and be ready to take on c5 with dxc5 when it opens lines for you.
Black
- 4...Bg7 develops and prepares to castle, the main reply.
- Use ...c5 to hit d4; it is the main Grünfeld break and works well here.
- ...dxc4 can win time if White's queenside is loose, then ...c5 follows.
- 4...c6 is a solid option that keeps d5 protected before ...Bg7.
Plans and pawn structure
White's bishop on f4 sits outside the pawn chain, so e3 doesn't lock it in. White plans Nf3, e3, Rc1 and pressure on c7 and the c-file. Black castles and hits the center with ...c5, often combined with ...dxc4 to deflect White's pawns. If Black gets ...c5 in safely, the long diagonal of the g7 bishop opens toward d4 and b2. The game is balanced and rich in piece play.
