Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play d4 to take the center, then hit the chain with g3 to open the f-file.
- After ...fxg3, recapture with the h-pawn to open the h-file for the h1 rook.
- Develop with Nc3 and Bc4, aiming at the f7 square while Black spends moves on pawns.
- Avoid quick Bc4 lines that let Black play ...d6 and ...g5 in comfort.
Black
- Follow with ...g5 and ...Bg7, protecting f4 and hitting the d4 pawn from long range.
- Use ...d6 to support e5 and open the c8 bishop for ...Bg4 later.
- If White plays g3, take with ...fxg3 and develop with ...Bg7 and ...Nc6.
- Keep the king in the center or castle long if the kingside opens.
Plans and pawn structure
The h6 and g5 pawns support f4, so White must break the chain with g3 or h4. After 4.Nc3 d6 5.d4 g5 6.g3 fxg3 7.hxg3 Bg7 the h-file opens for White's rook and Black has a strong bishop on g7. White plays Be3, Qd2 and long castling. Black develops ...Nc6 and ...Bg4 and pressures d4. Both sides have chances on the kingside.
