Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 4.Nc3 is the engine choice; after ...exf4, Qe2 and Nf3 develop quickly.
  • Play d3 or d4 to support e4, then develop the f1 bishop to g2 or c4.
  • 4.c4 grabs space and answers ...fxg3 with hxg3, opening the h-file for the rook.
  • Use the extra development to aim at e5 and Black's uncastled king.

Black

  • Take on f4 and then on g3 to win a pawn and open the g-file.
  • Develop with ...d6, ...Nc6 and ...Bg4 to pin the f3 knight and catch up.
  • ...d5 is a more active option that hits e4 at once and frees the c8 bishop.
  • Do not move the queen again; it has already spent two moves.

Plans and pawn structure

Black has spent two queen moves, so White leads in development. After ...exf4 and ...fxg3, Black wins a pawn but White gets open lines on the f-file and the h-file. White plays Nf3, d4, Qe2 and long or short castling depending on structure. Black needs ...d6, ...Nc6 and ...Bg4 to catch up, and should castle long or keep the king in the center. If Black consolidates, the extra pawn counts.

How to play against it

As White, play 4.Nc3 and develop fast. Do not worry about the g3 pawn; open lines are worth more. Play Nf3 and d4, and target Black's queen on e7 with Nd5 or a rook on the e-file later. Black is behind in development, so keep the position open.
