Key ideas for both sides
White
- Push e4 at a good moment, reaching a standard e4 structure where Black's ...Na6 is already committed.
- After ...e5, castle and meet ...exd4 with exd4, then Bg5 and later Be3 for active development.
- Against ...Nbd7 and ...e5, the engine takes with dxe5 and pins with Bg5.
- The e3 pawn keeps the dark squares near the king solid and leaves few targets.
Black
- ...e5 at once hits d4; after ...exd4 and exd4, ...Re8 presses on the open e-file.
- ...Na6 or ...Nbd7 support ...e5 and keep the c-pawn free for ...c6 or ...c5.
- Against Bg5, ...h6 questions the bishop and gives the king a little air.
- Once the e-file opens, aim the g7 bishop and a knight at the isolated d4 pawn.
Plans and pawn structure
White's e3 setup avoids the sharpest King's Indian lines and often turns into a main-line position after e4. If Black plays ...e5 and ...exd4 before e4, the e-file opens and White can be left with an isolated d4 pawn, a target for ...Nc6 and the g7 bishop. If White gets e4 in and takes on e5, the d-file opens and the game becomes a calm fight over d5 and d4.

As Black, play ...e5 directly or prepare it with ...Na6 or ...Nbd7. Answer exd4 recaptures with ...Re8 and pressure on d4. Do not let White play e4 for free when you could have struck first. As White, castle quickly and decide early whether e4 or a calm e3 setup suits you.
