King's Pawn Game: Alapin Opening
The Alapin Opening is 1.e4 e5 2.Ne2, developing the king's knight to e2 instead of f3. White plans d4 or f4 with the knight supporting from behind, while Black can develop freely and strike at once with ...Nf6 or ...Bc5 because the f1 bishop is blocked.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Push d4 next, as all three engine lines show, and recapture on d4 with the e2 knight.
- Against ...Nf6, d4 and e5 gain space and hit the knight, then Qxd4 regains the pawn.
- Consider f4 or a g3 fianchetto later to free the f1 bishop sitting behind the knight.
- After ...Bc5 and d4, use Nb3 to chase the bishop and win time.
Black
- ...Nf6 is the engine's first choice, hitting e4 while White's kingside is undeveloped.
- After d4 and ...exd4, meet e5 with ...Ne4 and then ...d5 to free the game.
- ...Nc6 and ...Bc5 are natural developing moves; the bishop eyes f2 and the d4 square.
- Play ...d5 when it is safe; White's blocked f1 bishop makes central breaks especially strong.
Plans and pawn structure
The knight on e2 blocks the f1 bishop, so White usually needs d4 and Nxd4 or a g3 fianchetto to untangle. Black gets easy development and can open the center with ...exd4 and ...d5. If White achieves d4 and a knight on d4, the position becomes an open Scotch-like game. If Black hits e4 quickly, White may struggle to defend it with the kingside still asleep.

How to play against it
As Black, play ...Nf6 or ...Nc6 and take on d4 when White pushes. Develop the bishops quickly and use ...d5 to exploit the blocked f1 bishop. Do not play passively with ...d6, which gives White time to untangle the knight and bishop.
