King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense
The Damiano Defense is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6, defending e5 with the f-pawn. It is a beginner's mistake: the move weakens the e8-h5 diagonal, takes f6 from the knight, and White has several strong replies, including Bc4 and the knight sacrifice Nxe5.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Bc4 is the engine's top choice, aiming at g8 and making Black's kingside castling hard.
- Nxe5 offers the knight; after ...fxe5, Qh5+ attacks the king and wins back more than a piece.
- d4 opens the center at once and lets the queen and bishops reach the weak king.
- Develop with tempo and keep lines open; the half-open diagonal to e8 is White's main target.
Black
- The move is bad, so aim for damage control and a playable position rather than winning chances.
- After Nxe5, play ...Qe7, as the engine does, and never ...fxe5 because of Qh5+.
- Against Bc4, build a center with ...c6 and ...d5 to block the bishop's diagonal.
- Develop the kingside pieces and castle as soon as possible to shield the king.
Plans and pawn structure
White's lead in development and Black's weak king decide the game. After Bc4, White aims down the a2-g8 diagonal and opens the center with d4. After Nxe5 and ...Qe7, Black wins the knight back with ...Qxe5 or after Nf3 with ...d5, but the queen comes out early and the king stays loose. White should open lines, develop with tempo on the queen and attack before Black can castle.

How to play against it
As White, play Bc4 or Nxe5 and open the game; do not settle for slow moves. After Nxe5, if Black takes with ...fxe5, Qh5+ wins material. As Black, avoid this line altogether; ...Nc6 defends e5 without weakening the king or blocking a knight.
