King's Pawn Game: Dresden Opening
The Dresden Opening is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c4, grabbing d5 with the c-pawn instead of developing a piece. White aims for a solid grip on the light squares, but the move leaves a hole on d4, and Black can use it with ...Bc5 and ...Nd4.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Follow with d3 and Be3, as in the engine line, to contest the d4 square.
- Play d4 when well prepared, so the hole on d4 disappears and the center opens.
- Against ...Nf6 and ...Bb4, use a3 and b4 to gain queenside space.
- Keep the knight on f3 to guard d4 and e5, and develop the kingside quickly.
Black
- ...Bc5 is the engine's top move: it aims at d4 and f2 and helps a knight land on d4.
- ...Nd4 is a strong outpost; White cannot easily kick it with the c-pawn gone.
- ...f5 is a sharp option, opening the f-file and hitting e4 at once.
- ...Nge7 and ...d6 build a flexible setup, keeping ...f5 or ...d5 ready later.
Plans and pawn structure
The c4 pawn takes d5 but gives up control of d4, and the d3 pawn can become weak. Black wants ...Bc5, ...d6 and a knight on d4. White tries to fix this with d3, Be3 and a well-timed d4. If White gets d4 in safely, the position becomes a normal open game with extra space. If Black owns d4, White ends up cramped and passive.
