How to Beat the Modern Defense

The Modern is sound enough, but it gives White a free center and the engine keeps a clear edge for White. You beat it by taking that center, developing calmly, and punishing the early mistakes Black can make with ...Nf6 or ...b6.

The simplest system: 2.d4 and Nc3

The engine's top line is 2.d4 d6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.Bg5 h6. White takes the center, develops both knights and pins the f6 knight. Castle short, play Be2 or Bd3, and keep the center protected. This simple setup works against nearly all Black move orders.

Geller's System, with Nf3 and c3, is an even calmer path: the pawn on c3 blunts the g7 bishop and supports d4 for good.

The reason this is so effective is that Black's flexibility depends on White doing something rash. If you just develop and protect d4, Black has to commit sooner or later, and the space you hold will make your pieces easier to place than Black's.

If you want a fight

The Three Pawns Attack, 3.f4, and the Pseudo-Austrian Attack, 4.f4, build a big center and threaten e5. Black must hit back quickly, often with ...c5. Meet it calmly: take on c5 or push d5, and keep the e5 push ready.

Another attacking plan is Be3, Qd2 and Bh6 to trade the g7 bishop, then h4 and h5 against a short-castled king.

The aggressive plans work best when Black has already castled short. If the black king is still on e8, keep developing and open the center instead.

In the Three Pawns lines, castle short and use the f-file if Black opens the center. A knight on f3 supports both e5 and d4, and a bishop on e3 or d3 completes the setup.

Punish the early mistakes

  • The Norwegian, 2...Nf6. Push e5 to kick the knight. The engine gives White a clear edge.
  • The Mongredien, 3...b6. Black ignores the center. Develop with Nc3, Bd3 and O-O, and use your space.
  • The Bishop Attack, 3.Bc4. It aims at f7, but the engine edge is small. Use it only as a surprise.

In general, the early mistakes in the Modern all have the same cause: Black commits a piece before the center is settled, and White's e5 or d5 gains time against it.

Against ...c6 and ...b5 setups

Some Modern players avoid ...Nf6 for a long time and play ...c6, ...a6 and ...b5 instead, gaining queenside space and preparing ...Bb7 and ...c5. This is more dangerous than it looks, because White's center can come under fire from both bishops.

The simplest answer is to keep developing and castle. A pawn on a4 hits the b5 pawn and opens lines on the queenside. In the center, keep e4 and d4 protected, and push e5 when it takes squares from Black's knights. A bishop on d3 and a knight on f3 help hold e4 when Black's bishop arrives on b7.

If Black's king stays in the center for a long time, open the position with d5 or e5 to punish the slow development.

This plan also works against ...c6 and ...d5 ideas, where Black hits e4 directly. Keep e4 protected with Nc3 and push e5 only when Black's pieces cannot use the d5 square.

Plans once the opening is over

Your main advantage is space. Keep d4 protected, develop all pieces, and look for e5 or d5 to cramp Black further. When Black's bishop is traded, attack the dark squares around the king with the queen and a knight.

If Black expands on the queenside with ...a6 and ...b5, play a4 to open lines there, or switch to a kingside attack. Do not push pawns without piece support; that is what Black is waiting for.

Finally, remember that many Modern positions transpose to the Pirc. If Black plays ...Nf6 and castles, your Pirc plans apply: Be3, Qd2 and Bh6 for an attack, or Nf3, Be2 and h3 for a calm game. Learn one plan for each structure and the Modern becomes much easier to face. Above all, do not rush: Black wants you to overreach.
