Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 3.d4 and answer ...d5 with e5, building a French chain on d4 and e5 with a space edge.
- Use Bb5, as in the top engine line, to pin the c6 knight and add pressure behind the e5 pawn.
- Add c3 to reinforce d4, so the base of the chain cannot be hit by the c6 knight.
- After ...f6, keep e5 protected by the f3 knight and recapture with a piece if Black takes on e5.
Black
- Play ...d5, and after e5 strike at the head of the chain with ...f6 to open the f-file.
- Develop with ...Nge7 and ...Bd7, as in the engine line, to prepare ...f6 and a knight jump to f5.
- The knight on c6 blocks the c-pawn, so the usual ...c5 break needs the knight to move first.
- Meet a Bb5 pin with ...Bd7, which unpins and keeps the pawn structure solid on the queenside.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a French structure with Black's knight on c6 instead of a pawn on c5. White's chain on d4 and e5 gives space and kingside chances, while Black's main break is ...f6. Because the knight sits on c6, the usual ...c5 break is harder, so Black often relies on ...f6 and piece pressure against d4 with ...Nf5. White wants to keep e5 with c3, Bb5 and the f3 knight and use the extra space for a kingside attack.
Where the engine's main line heads: French chain: d4–e5 against d5–e6. The French chain: White's pawns on d4 and e5 face Black's on d5 and e6. White has kingside space, Black attacks the base of the chain.
