Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play d3 and a4 for a slow Italian-style setup, as the engine prefers.
- Prepare d4 with O-O and Re1, as in the second engine line, to build a full center.
- Against ...Nc6, play Qb3 to hit f7 and b7 at once.
- Keep the bishop on c4 and use Ng5 ideas against f7 when Black castles.
Black
- Develop with 4...Nf6 and ...O-O, then use ...Be6 to trade White's c4 bishop.
- Play ...c5 to gain space and keep d4 under control.
- Answer d4 with ...exd4 and cxd4, then use ...Re8 and ...Nb6 against the center.
- Avoid 4...Nc6, since Qb3 hits f7 and b7.
Plans and pawn structure
The structure is quiet: c3, d3 and e4 against e5, or a full d4 center after O-O and Re1. White plays a4, Nbd2 and Ng5 ideas, aiming at f7 and the light squares. Black plays ...Nf6, ...O-O, ...Be6 and ...c5, then ...Nc6 or ...Nbd7. Neither side is weak, and the game is about piece placement.
Where the engine's main line heads: Quiet center: c3–d3–e4 against e5. A slow center: White has c3, d3 and e4 against e5. Nobody is in a hurry, and the d3–d4 break decides when the game opens.
