Pirc Defense: Roscher Gambit
The Roscher Gambit is 3.Nf3 against the Pirc, developing the knight and leaving e4 unprotected. White hopes for quick development and an attack after Black takes, while Black can simply grab the pawn with 3...Nxe4 and keep it.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- After 3...Nxe4, play 4.Bd3 to chase the knight and 5.O-O, as in the engine's top line.
- Use c4 and Nc3 to build space and develop with gain of time against the retreated f6 knight.
- If Black declines with ...c5 or ...e5, Nc3 transposes to normal open play with no material down.
- Keep pieces active and look for Re1 against the e-file before Black finishes castling.
Black
- Take with 3...Nxe4. It is the engine's top choice and wins a clean pawn.
- Retreat with ...Nf6 when hit, then fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 and castle short.
- If you prefer to avoid theory, 3...c5 or 3...e5 are sound but give back the free pawn.
- Do not rush the queen out; quiet development keeps the extra pawn safe.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a dubious gambit for White: 3.Nf3 simply drops e4 for some development. After 3...Nxe4 4.Bd3 Nf6 5.O-O, Black plays ...g6, ...Bg7 and ...O-O, then can think about ...c5 or ...e5 to challenge d4. White's compensation is a lead in development and the open e-file after Re1, plus space from c4 and Nc3. If Black castles safely, the extra pawn should tell in the long run. If Black declines, the game becomes a normal open position with chances for both.

How to play against it
Accept the gambit with 3...Nxe4. Answer Bd3 with ...Nf6, then play ...g6, ...Bg7 and castle. Avoid grabbing more material or making extra queen moves before your king is safe, because that is the only way White gets real play. If you would rather avoid the debate, 3...c5 also gives a fine game.
