Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 5.d3, the top engine line, then Nbd2 and d4 once Black's center is set.
- Taking on d5 with exd5 trades queens after ...Qxd5 and Qc4, leading to an equal endgame.
- Use Be2 and castling to keep the king safe before opening lines.
- The queen on a4 can return to the center later if Black frees the pin with ...Bd7.
Black
- Develop with ...Ne7 so the c6 knight gets extra protection and ...Bd7 can unpin it.
- Keep the center with ...d5 and ...e5; the f6 pawn holds e5 against Nxe5 tricks.
- Use ...a6 and ...b5 to chase the queen off a4 and gain queenside space.
- Castle short after ...Ne7 and a bishop move, accepting the weakened g8-a2 diagonal.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's ...f6 is ugly but practical: it stops Nxe5 ideas that the pin on c6 would allow. Black ends up with a broad e5 and d5 center and plans ...Ne7, ...Bd7 and ...a6 to unpin and gain space. White develops with d3, Nbd2 and Be2 and looks for d4 to challenge the center. The light squares around Black's king are a long-term issue, so White wants diagonals open toward g8.

How to play against it
As White, avoid grabbing material and play 5.d3, Nbd2 and later d4. The queen on a4 will be chased by ...a6 and ...b5, so plan a retreat in advance. If you prefer simplicity, exd5 Qxd5 and Qc4 trades queens into a level endgame.
