Queen's Gambit Declined: Orthodox Defense

The Orthodox Defense is 6...Nbd7 after 5.Bg5 O-O 6.e3, Black's traditional setup in the Queen's Gambit Declined. The game becomes a tempo battle: White wants useful moves like Rc1 or Qc2 before moving the f1 bishop, while Black waits to play ...dxc4 only after that bishop moves.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 7.Rc1 is a useful waiting move: the rook belongs on c1 in almost every line.
  • 7.Qc2 aims at h7 and c7 and keeps open the option of castling long.
  • 7.Bd3 develops but lets Black take on c4 and win a tempo on the bishop.
  • After ...dxc4 and Bxc4, use a4 and the d5 push to stop Black's ...b5 and ...c5 plan.

Black

  • Take on c4 with ...dxc4 only after White's f1 bishop has moved, so it must move twice.
  • ...a6 with ...b5 or ...b6 prepares the ...c5 break, as in the top engine line.
  • Against Qc2, ...h6 and ...c5 hit the center at once before White castles.
  • ...Nb6 after ...dxc4 can chase a bishop on c4 and free the d7 square for the c8 bishop.

Plans and pawn structure

This is the classic waiting game. White makes moves like Rc1, Qc2 and a3 while Black makes ...h6, ...c6 or ...a6, and whoever runs out of useful moves first gives up a tempo. After ...dxc4 and Bxc4, Black aims for ...c5 or ...e5 to free the c8 bishop. White uses central space for d5 or e4 and keeps the rook on the c-file. If Black's freeing break works, the game is level; if not, Black stays cramped.

How to play against it

As White, play Rc1 or Qc2 first and delay Bd3, so you do not lose a tempo after ...dxc4. Keep an eye on ...Ne4 trades. As Black, wait with ...h6 or ...a6 until the f1 bishop moves, then take on c4 and push ...c5.
