Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Push 5.e4 at once: the pawn takes the center and opens the f1-bishop's road to c4 to win the pawn back.
  • Pin the f6 knight with Bg5 so Black's counterattack on e4 loses force, then recapture on c4 with the bishop.
  • After ...cxd4 recapture with Nxd4, keep pieces active and use the open lines rather than defending a weak pawn.
  • 5.Qa4+ is a calm alternative: after ...c6 Qxc4 regains the pawn, though ...b5 gains Black queenside time.

Black

  • Answer e4 with ...Bb4, pinning the c3 knight so the e4 pawn is harder to hold.
  • Strike with ...c5 to trade the c-pawn for d4 and open the position before White finishes castling.
  • Bring the queen to a5 after ...cxd4, adding pressure to the pinned c3 knight and the g5 bishop.
  • Against quieter play like e3, use ...a6 and ...b5 to gain space and develop the bishop to b7.

Plans and pawn structure

After 5.e4 Bb4 the game opens fast. White regains c4 with the bishop and aims for central space and piece activity, often with the king's safety as the main worry. Black's ...c5 and ...cxd4 clear the c-file and leave White a lone central e-pawn, so Black targets e4 and the pinned c3 knight. The structure resembles an Open Sicilian: White has the e-pawn, Black the d- and e-file majority. Whoever coordinates the pieces faster usually takes over.

Where the engine's main line heads: Open Sicilian: White traded the d-pawn for Black's c-pawn. An Open Sicilian: White traded the d-pawn for Black's c-pawn. White has a lead in development and the d-file, Black has the half-open c-file and two central pawns.

How to play against it

As White, do not try to hold the c4 pawn with b3 or similar. Play 5.e4, develop, and take c4 back with the bishop. Expect ...Bb4 and ...c5, so keep the c3 knight protected and do not let Black's queen land on a5 with several pins at once.
