Key ideas for both sides
White
- Keep the pin on f6 so Black's d5 pawn has one fewer defender, and hit d5 again with Nc3 and cxd5.
- After 4...dxc4 play 5.e4 and meet ...b5 with a4, attacking the pawn chain before it settles.
- If Black plays ...h6 consider Bxf6: White gives the bishop pair but gains time for Nc3 and e3.
- The b1 knight is still flexible, so it can go to c3 or d2 depending on Black's setup.
Black
- 4...dxc4 is the most direct: take the pawn and support it with ...b5 and ...c6 after 5.e4.
- 4...Bb4+ leads to the Vienna Variation and forces White to decide about the b1 knight right away.
- Play ...h6 to put the question to the bishop; after Bxf6 Qxf6 Black keeps two bishops.
- Prepare ...c5 to challenge d4 once development is done, as in several engine lines.
Plans and pawn structure
The pin on f6 shapes every plan. If Black takes on c4, White builds a center with e4 and works against the queenside pawns with a4, while Black clings to the extra pawn with ...b5 and ...c6. If Black plays ...Bb4+ or ...h6, the game becomes a classical Queen's Gambit fight where White trades on d5 and Black frees the position with ...c5. The bishop pair after Bxf6 gives Black long-term chances if the center opens.

As Black, choose your plan early. 4...dxc4 is sharp and needs ...b5 and ...c6 ready after 5.e4. If you prefer calm play, 4...Bb4+ gets a good version of the Vienna. Avoid passive moves that leave the f6 pin in place while White builds Nc3, e3 and Rc1.
