Key ideas for both sides
White
- Use the f4 pawn to support e5, driving away a knight on f6 and gaining kingside space.
- Develop with Nc3 and Nf3, then castle; the engine line 2...c5 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.Nf3 gives a Grand Prix flavor.
- Against ...e5, keep the center with d3 and Nf3 rather than taking on e5 too early.
Black
- Play 2...c5, the engine's top move, heading for Sicilian-style play where the f4 pawn is less useful.
- Strike with ...e5 and a kingside fianchetto, as in the engine line, putting the bishop on g7.
- Develop ...Nf6 to hit e4 at once; if e5 comes, retreat to d7 and attack the pawn with ...c5 and ...Nc6.
Plans and pawn structure
With pawns on e4 and f4, White plans a kingside attack: Nf3, Bc4 or Bb5, castling and a later f5 or e5 push. Black's best counter is central pressure. After 2...c5 the game resembles a Grand Prix Sicilian, and Black aims for ...g6 and ...Bg7 to hit d4 and the long diagonal. After 2...e5 3.d3 g6, the position stays closed, and both sides maneuver before a break with f5 or ...f5.
What the Rat Defense is about
The Rat Defense is a family of early ...d6 lines. Black supports ...e5, opens the c8 bishop, and refuses to commit the knights or the e-pawn at once. The starting position here, 1.e4 d6 2.f4, shows White taking extra kingside space and aiming for e5 or f5 later.
Across 3921 games from this position White scored 52.5%. The engine rates it as level: 2...c5 and 2...e5 both give Black a balanced game, and 2...Nf6 is only a little worse.
The main variations
Most of the games in this family come from other move orders where Black plays an early ...d6.
The Small Center Defense, 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d6, is the most played line. Black builds a compact center with pawns on d6 and e6 and waits to see White's setup. The engine gives White a pleasant space edge.
The Antal Defense, 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nd7, keeps the knight flexible and prepares ...e5, so that a pawn trade on e5 does not force the queens off. White again keeps a small edge.
The English Rat, 1.d4 d6 2.c4 e5, is the soundest line in the family. Black hits d4 at once, and White scored exactly 50% in 1832 games. Play often turns into a closed center after d5, with Black aiming for ...f5 and a kingside fight.
The Balogh Defense, 1.e4 d6 2.d4 f5, is the risky try. Black attacks e4 with the f-pawn but opens the king, and the engine gives White a large advantage.
Typical plans for White
In the 2.f4 line White's plan is space and attack. Nf3 and Nc3 support e4, the f1 bishop goes to c4 or b5, and White castles short. Then e5 to push away a knight on f6, or f5 to cramp Black's kingside, are the main ideas.
- Against ...c5, play Nc3 and Nf3 for a Grand Prix setup and bring the queen toward the kingside via e1 or e2.
- Against ...e5, the engine plays d3 and keeps the center closed; do not rush fxe5.
- In the d4 lines, the extra space lets White play c4 and Nc3 for a big center.
Typical plans for Black
Black's job is to challenge the center before White's pawns roll. The most flexible plan is ...c5 with ...Nc6, ...g6 and ...Bg7, aiming at d4 and the long diagonal. Another approach is ...e5 with a kingside fianchetto, as in the engine line 2...e5 3.d3 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.c3 Nh6 6.Be2, where the knight on h6 heads for f7 or g4 depending on White's play.
- Against e5 pushes, keep the knight safe on d7 and attack the pawn with ...c5 or ...dxe5.
- Castle short once White's f-pawn has committed; a king on g8 behind g6 is solid.
- In the Small Center lines, ...Nf6, ...Be7 and ...O-O followed by ...c5 or ...e5 is the standard setup.
Mistakes club players make
- Black staying passive. If Black keeps every piece behind the d6 pawn, White's e5 and f5 pushes arrive with real force.
- Playing the Balogh without preparation. The f-pawn push against a d4 and e4 center weakens e6 and the king, and White opens lines quickly.
- White taking on e5 too soon. In the ...e5 lines, fxe5 opens the f-file but frees Black's game. Keep the tension with d3.
- White neglecting development for pawn moves. The f4 pawn is useful only if the kingside pieces follow; pushing more pawns before castling leaves White's own king loose.
Who should play it
The Rat Defense suits Black players who like flexible, compact setups and counterpunching. It can transpose to the Pirc, Philidor or Sicilian, so it pairs well with those openings. It does demand a feel for when to strike, because White gets space for free.
For White, 2.f4 is a direct, attacking way to meet 1...d6. Players who prefer classical play can choose d4 lines and aim for a big center instead.
In the 2.f4 line itself, the engine's top replies all keep Black flexible: 2...c5 leads to Sicilian structures, 2...e5 to a closed fianchetto game, and 2...Nf6 hits e4 and invites e5. Pick the structure you already know from your other openings.

How to play against it
As Black, do not let White's pawns roll forward. Play 2...c5 or 2...Nf6 to hit the center quickly, and develop before White's e5 or f5 push arrives. Avoid passive setups where Black's pieces stay behind the d6 pawn; then White's extra space turns into a direct attack.
