Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play 6.g3 and Bg2, the top engine line, so the bishop presses down the long diagonal toward b7.
  • Bring the c1 bishop to f4 to hit the d6 queen and gain time.
  • With h3 and g4, White can grab kingside space and kick the f6 knight.
  • The Bg5 and a4 setup stops ...b5 and keeps Black's queenside quiet.

Black

  • Use the a6 pawn: ...b5 and ...Bb7 aim at White's long diagonal.
  • Develop with ...Nc6 and ...e6 and retreat the queen to d8 if Bf4 comes.
  • Play ...Be7 and castle short; the position is solid if Black finishes development.
  • Hit White's center with ...c5 when the queen is no longer in the way.

Plans and pawn structure

White owns the d4 pawn and Black has no d-pawn, so the e-file and the d-file matter. White develops with g3, Bg2, Bf4 and castling, aiming at the queen and the long diagonal. Black finishes with ...Nc6, ...e6, ...Be7 and ...O-O and uses ...b5 or ...c5 to gain queenside play. The ...a6 move costs time, so White should develop fast and keep the initiative.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it

As White, play g3 and Bf4 to gain time on the queen. Avoid knight jumps to b5, since ...a6 already covers that square. Castle short and play against Black's slow development, keeping an eye on ...b5 and ...Bb7 against your long diagonal.
