Key ideas for both sides
White
- Develop Nc3 and Bf4, then castle long, as in the engine line, putting a rook on d1 behind the queen.
- The bishop can later move to e2 so the d-file opens for the rook.
- Use Nd5 if Black plays ...Be6 and ...Be7, trading a defender of the kingside.
- The queen on d4 is strong, but watch for ...c5 or ...Nc6 hitting it.
Black
- Play ...Nf6, ...Be7 and ...O-O, then ...Re8 to press the e4 pawn.
- Use ...c6 to take d5 and b5 from White's knight and prepare a later ...d5 push.
- After White castles long, push ...c5 and ...b5 to open lines on the queenside.
- Look for ...Be6 to develop with tempo when White's queen or knight lands on d5.
Plans and pawn structure
White has more space with the e4 pawn, while Black has a solid d6 pawn and no weaknesses. White's typical plan is Nc3, Bf4, Be2 and long castling, then a kingside pawn storm with f4 and g4. Black castles short and uses ...Re8, ...Bf8 and ...c6 to build a sturdy setup, then looks for ...d5 or a queenside pawn storm against White's king. The position is calm but rich in plans.
