Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After ...dxe4 Nxe4 Bb4+, block with Bd2 and allow ...Qxd4, then Bxb4 and Be2 give strong dark-square pressure.
  • Aim the b4 bishop at d6 and f8, keeping Black's king from castling easily.
  • Develop with Nf3, O-O and a rook to d1, using open lines against the black queen.
  • If Black declines with ...h6, push e5 and build a space edge before Black finishes development.

Black

  • 4...dxe4 is the main reply; after Nxe4 Bb4+, Black can take on d4 and later on e4 with check.
  • After the queen grabs on e4, get the queen back to safety and play ...Na6 or ...c5 to fight the b4 bishop.
  • Do not leave the king in the center for long; consider ...Ne7 and ...O-O when possible.
  • 4...Bb4 transposes to similar ideas; 4...h6 is too slow and lets White play e5 with a clear edge.

Plans and pawn structure

After the gambit, Black has an extra pawn but weak dark squares around d6 and e7. White's bishop on b4 controls those squares, and the queen and rooks join quickly. White wants Nf3, O-O, Qd6 ideas and pressure on the d-file. Black wants to trade queens, untangle with ...Na6 and ...Ne7 and complete castling, then use the extra pawn. If Black survives the first phase, the extra pawn starts to matter.
