Sicilian Defense: Bücker Variation
The Bucker Variation is 2.Nf3 h6, a rare Sicilian waiting move that takes g5 away from White's knight and bishop. White simply develops with Nc3 and d4 and gets a comfortable edge, because ...h6 does nothing for Black's development or center.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.Nc3 and d4 lead to an Open Sicilian where Black has spent a tempo on ...h6.
- In the open lines, Bc4 aims at f7, and the engine shows Black answering with ...e5 to block the center.
- Consider Nf5 when the knight on d4 is hit by ...e5, using the f5 square.
- 3.c3 is also fine, playing an Alapin structure where ...h6 is a lost tempo.
Black
- Use ...h6 to stop Bg5 pins and Ng5 jumps, then develop with ...Nf6, ...d6 and ...e5.
- Play ...e5 in the open lines to fight for d4 and kick the knight.
- Accept that ...h6 is slow and catch up in development quickly with ...Nf6 and ...Nc6.
- Avoid more waiting moves; you need pieces out before White's lead turns into an attack.
Plans and pawn structure
This is an Open Sicilian with Black a tempo down. White develops with Nc3, d4, Bc4 and castles, and can aim for f4 or a Bc4 setup against f7. Black's ...h6 helps against Bg5, but it can be a target for a later g4 push. Black usually plays ...d6, ...Nf6 and ...e5 to control d4 and gain space. If Black catches up in development, the game becomes a normal Sicilian.

How to play against it
With White, play 3.Nc3 or 3.d4 and develop quickly. Do not let Black use the time for a comfortable ...e5 setup. With Black, if you play this, follow up with fast development, ...Nf6, ...d6 and ...e5, and accept a slightly worse game.
