Sicilian Defense: Franco-Sicilian Variation
The Franco-Sicilian is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 e6, where Black plays ...e6 instead of taking on d4. This is a mistake: White can push d5, hitting the c6 knight and grabbing big space before Black's pieces are ready.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- 4.d5 is best. After ...Na5, d6 cramps Black's position and blocks the f8 bishop.
- Then Nc3 and e5 gain more space; Black's knight on a5 stays out of play.
- If you prefer simple play, Nc3 allows ...cxd4 Nxd4 and a normal open Sicilian.
- Bg5 is a quieter way to develop, trading the dark bishops after ...Be7.
Black
- The safer move order is ...cxd4 on move three, which avoids the d5 push entirely.
- If d5 comes, ...Na5 keeps the knight near c4. Then ...b6 and ...a6 try to stabilize.
- After d6, the pawn is a target; aim ...Bb7, ...Nc6 and ...Qb8 to win it later.
- Avoid wild moves. Black must survive the opening before hoping for counterplay.
Plans and pawn structure
After 4.d5 Na5 5.d6, Black is cramped: the f8 bishop is blocked and the a5 knight is offside. White develops with Nc3, Bf4 and e5, keeping the d6 pawn protected and building pressure. Black's hope is to round up d6 with ...Nc6, ...Qb8 and ...Bb7. If White's support breaks, Black wins a pawn, but this takes many moves. Most of the time White ends up with a big space edge and an easy game.
