Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Nbc3 and g3 with Bg2 build a Closed Sicilian setup with the knight on e2.
  • d4 later with Nxd4 transposes to an open Sicilian, often with an extra choice.
  • Against ...d5, exd5 and c4 can keep the extra pawn for a time while Black regains it.
  • Castle short behind the g2 bishop before starting f4 or d4 in the center.

Black

  • ...a6 and ...b5 gain queenside space, as the top engine line shows.
  • ...Nf6 and ...e5 build a solid center that takes d4 away from White.
  • ...d5 hits the center at once, and ...Nf6 regains the pawn on d5.
  • After ...e5, the bishop often goes to b7 or e7 depending on White's setup.

Plans and pawn structure

White's knight on e2 keeps both d4 and closed setups available. White often plays Nbc3, g3 and Bg2, then castles. Black uses ...a6 and ...b5 for queenside space, or ...Nf6 and ...e5 for central control, making d4 hard to play. If Black chooses ...d5, White can take and try to hold the pawn with c4, but Black gets activity after ...e6 and fast development.

Where the engine's main line heads: Open game: e4 against e5. An open game: e4 against e5. Development, the f7 and f2 squares, and the d4 or d5 break are what count.

How to play against it

With Black, play ...a6 and ...b5 or ...Nf6 and ...e5. Do not let White get a strong setup without a fight in the center. If you prefer open play, ...d5 is a good option, but be ready for c4 and know how to recover the pawn.
