Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Meet 3...d5 with exd5 and develop with Be2, O-O and Re1, as in the engine line, before pushing d4.
  • Against 3...Nf6, push e5 and follow with d4; after ...Nd5, Bc4 hits the knight and speeds castling.
  • Against 3...e6, play d4 and answer ...d5 with e5, reaching a French-type chain where Bd3 and Na3 help.

Black

  • Play 3...d5 at once; after exd5 Qxd5 the queen is active and White has not yet played d4.
  • The 3...Nf6 move hits e4 and invites e5, after which ...Nd5 and ...cxd4 challenge White's pawns.
  • With ...e6 and ...d5, aim for ...Nc6 and ...Nge7, pressuring d4 in a French-style structure.

Plans and pawn structure

With c3 played, White wants d4 next and a two-pawn center. Black's job is to hit e4 before that happens, with ...d5 or ...Nf6. After ...d5 exd5 Qxd5, Black's queen sits in the center; White develops with Be2, O-O and Re1 and only then plays d4, later gaining time on the queen with Na3 or c4. After ...e6 and ...d5, the center locks and the ...a6 move helps Black push ...b5 on the queenside.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, do not let White play d4 for free. Hit the center with 3...d5 or 3...Nf6, and develop with ...Nc6 and ...Nf6 after the queen recapture. Avoid quiet moves like ...d6, which give White time for d4 and a big center.
