Key ideas for both sides
White
- After 2...d5 3.exd5 Qxd5, develop with 4.Nf3 and push 5.d4 to grab the center, as the engine line shows.
- The point of b4 is d4: once the c5 pawn leaves, White can play d4 without allowing a trade.
- a3 offers more material to open the a-file and gain time against Black's pieces on the queenside.
- Use Nc3 to attack the black queen whenever it lands on d5, gaining a tempo for development.
Black
- 2...d5 is the engine's choice: hit e4 at once and develop the queen after 3.exd5 Qxd5.
- 2...cxb4 is also fine; follow with ...d5 to fight White's center before it forms.
- Keep the b4 pawn only while it costs nothing. Black's real asset here is time, not material.
- ...e5 is a sharp option, though White gets tactics against f7 in that line after Nxe5.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a dubious gambit: the engine prefers Black after all three natural replies. If Black takes on b4, White wants a3, d4 and quick development with Bd3 and Nf3. If Black counters with 2...d5, the center opens early and White's loose queenside becomes a target. Black develops with ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...Be7, keeps the queen safe from Nc3 hits, and uses the half-open c-file. White's best hope is piece activity and an early lead in development.
Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.

How to play against it
As Black, take the center seriously. 2...d5 is clean: after 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.Nf3 cxb4 5.d4 you are a pawn up with easy development. Do not chase further pawns if it costs time, and avoid putting the queen where Nc3 gains a tempo.
Questions
What are the moves of the Sicilian Defense: Wing Gambit?
The Sicilian Defense: Wing Gambit starts 1.e4 c5 2.b4. Its ECO code is B20.
Is the Sicilian Defense: Wing Gambit good for White?
Stockfish 17.1 rates the position −0.42 at depth 20, which is a slight edge for Black. In 4,336 lichess games from our sample, White scored 49.2%. Fun for gambit fans at fast time controls, but a calm Black player who answers with ...d5 is simply better.
What is the main idea of the Sicilian Defense: Wing Gambit?
White sacrifices the b-pawn so the c5 pawn no longer controls d4, then builds a center with d4. Black's best answer is to hit the center with ...d5 or take on b4 and develop quickly.
What should Black play next?
The engine's first choice is d5, with cxb4 and e5 close behind. 2...d5 strikes the center at once, so White's gambit idea of a free d4 is met by quick development.
