Key ideas for both sides
White
- Push e5 to kick the f6 knight and gain kingside space, then castle and bring the rooks to the center.
- After 5...b5, develop with 6.Be2 and 7.O-O, then hit the chain with 8.a4 and b3 as the engine line shows.
- If Black plays 5...Bg4 or 5...e6, simply recapture with Bxc4 and enjoy a strong center.
- Keep the d4 and e4 pawns side by side; they are White's whole compensation for the pawn.
Black
- 5...b5 is the only move that keeps the balance: it protects c4 and gains queenside space.
- Follow with ...e6, ...Bb7 and ...a6, building a solid shell around the extra pawn.
- Against a4, answer with ...a6 so the b5 pawn stays supported by a pawn.
- Avoid 5...e6 and 5...Bg4, which let White regain c4 for free with Bxc4.
Plans and pawn structure
White has a classical e4 and d4 center for the c4 pawn. Black's queenside pawns on b5 and c4 are the counterweight. White plays e5, Be2, O-O and then a4 and b3 to break the chain. Black defends with ...e6, ...Bb7, ...a6 and later ...c5 to challenge d4. If Black's chain survives, the extra pawn tells; if White breaks it while keeping the center, White's pieces take over.

How to play against it
As Black, play 5...b5 at once and follow with ...e6 and ...Bb7. Do not let White take back on c4 for free. If White pushes e5, put the knight on d5 and look for ...c5 to hit d4 and open the long diagonal for your bishop.
