Key ideas for both sides
White
- Push f4, the Vienna Gambit, and after ...d5 take on e5 to gain space and kick the f6 knight.
- Play Bc4 to aim at f7; if Black grabs with ...Nxe4, Qh5 creates a mate threat on f7.
- Nf3 is the simplest developing move and often transposes to Four Knights positions after ...Nc6.
- The g3 fianchetto gives a slower game, with the bishop on the long diagonal pressing d5.
Black
- Against f4, answer ...d5, hitting e4 and grabbing central space before White can push e5.
- Against Bc4, play ...Bc5 or ...Nc6 and avoid grabbing e4 unless you know the ...Nd6 defense.
- Against Nf3, ...Nc6 develops, protects the e5 pawn and keeps the central balance.
- Prepare ...d5 against slow setups; it frees Black's game in one move.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a crossroads. After f4 d5, the game becomes sharp: White's e5 pawn gains space and Black's knight sits on e4. After Bc4, both sides develop and White keeps tactical chances on f7. After Nf3, the game slows into symmetrical development with plans like d4 or d3 and castling. Black's main pawn break in every line is ...d5, and White's is d4 or f4.

How to play against it
As White, pick a plan that suits you: f4 for open attacking play or Bc4 for development with tricks on f7. If Black grabs e4 after Bc4, Qh5 and the threat on f7 must be met carefully. Avoid passive moves that let ...d5 come for free.
