Zukertort Opening: Arctic Defense
The Arctic Defense is 1...f6 against 1.Nf3, a dubious move that weakens Black's king and takes the best square from the g8 knight. White should simply grab the center with e4 and d4, while Black tries to rebuild with ...e5 or ...f5.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 2.e4, the top engine move, and follow with d4 for a full pawn center Black cannot easily challenge.
- Develop quickly with Be3 and c4 as in the main line, using the time Black spends on ...Nh6 and ...Nf7.
- Watch the e8-h5 diagonal: a queen on h5 can become strong if Black weakens further with ...g6.
Black
- After 2.e4 the knight must go 2...Nh6 and then ...Nf7, a slow route since f6 is blocked.
- Use ...e5 as a later central claim, backed by the f6 pawn, as in the top engine line.
- Against 2.d4 consider ...f5, admitting the extra tempo and playing a Dutch setup instead.
Plans and pawn structure
1...f6 is a beginner's mistake, not a system. White's plan is simple: build a center with e4 and d4, develop with Be3 and c4, and castle short. Black's pieces lack good squares because the f6 pawn blocks the knight and weakens e6 and the light squares near the king. Black's best hope is to play ...c6 and ...e5 and keep the center closed. If White opens the e-file or the h5-e8 diagonal, Black's king can come under fire early.

How to play against it
As White, take the center with 2.e4 and 3.d4. Do not rush into a queen attack before developing. Keep pieces flexible, play Be3 and c4, and castle. Black has spent a move weakening the king, so let it cost time rather than chasing tricks.
