Key ideas for both sides
White
- After 2...Nxe4 play 3.d4 and Bd3, hitting the knight and building a center to make up the pawn.
- Follow with c4 and quick short castling, aiming the rooks at the e-file and Black's slow development.
- If Black declines with 2...e5, take with 3.Nxe5 and reach a Petroff-like game where White is fine.
Black
- Take with 2...Nxe4, the top engine move; the pawn is real and White's compensation is limited.
- After 3.d4 play ...e6, then retreat the knight to f6 and strike with ...c5 as in the main line.
- 2...d6 and ...c5 reach a Najdorf-style Sicilian with ...a6, a safe alternative to taking.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a dubious gambit: Black simply wins a pawn. White's plan is to use the time with d4, Bd3, c4 and short castling, then aim pieces at Black's king. Black consolidates with ...e6, ...Nf6, ...c5 and ...Be7, and the extra pawn should tell once the pieces are out. If Black plays greedy moves instead of developing, White's lead in development can turn into a kingside attack.

How to play against it
As Black, take with 2...Nxe4 and develop with ...e6, ...Nf6 and ...c5. Do not grab more pawns or move the queen early. Castle, trade pieces where possible and let the extra pawn count in the endgame. White's attack only works if your king stays in the center or your pieces sit on the back rank.
