Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play d4 and Bg5 to pin the f6 knight, then trade on f6 and push e4.
  • Against 2...d4, Ne4 and Ng3 reroute the knight, then e3 to break the d4 pawn.
  • After 2...e6, push 3.e4 and meet ...d4 with Ne2 and c3 to challenge the center.

Black

  • 2...d4 kicks the c3 knight and gains space; follow with ...f5 and ...Nc6.
  • 2...Nf6 and ...e6 build a compact setup; meet the Bg5 pin calmly with ...Be7.
  • Against e4, push ...d4 to gain space and support it with ...c5 and ...Nf6.

Plans and pawn structure

White's knight on c3 blocks the c-pawn, so White plays for e4 or d4 instead. Black's best try is to grab space with ...d4, kicking the knight and gaining time. In the ...Nf6 and ...e6 lines, both sides develop and fight for e4. If White gets e4 in cleanly, Black's center comes under pressure; if Black's ...d4 pawn holds, White must break it with e3 or c3.

How to play against it

As Black, choose 2...d4 to gain space or 2...Nf6 to develop solidly. Don't let White push e4 freely. After ...d4, support it with ...c5 or ...e5 so White's e3 break doesn't win it. Keep your bishops active before locking the center.
