Blackburne Shilling Gambit trap

Black leaves e5 hanging with 3...Nd4 and answers 4.Nxe5 with 4...Qg5, attacking the knight and g2. If White grabs f7 with 5.Nxf7, the queen wins the h1 rook and the game ends with a smothered knight mate on f3.

How the trap works

The Blackburne Shilling Gambit starts from an Italian Game: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 and now 3...Nd4. The knight jump leaves the e5 pawn unprotected. Objectively it is a poor move, and the evaluation gives White a clear advantage after it.

The trap starts when White grabs the pawn. After 4.Nxe5 the evaluation already tips toward Black, because 4...Qg5 hits two targets at once: the knight on e5 and the g2 pawn.

  • 5.Nxf7? is the mistake. White forks the queen and the rook on h8 but ignores the threat on g2.
  • 5...Qxg2 takes the pawn and attacks the h1 rook.
  • 6.Rf1 saves the rook but leaves e4 loose. 6...Qxe4+ comes with check.
  • 7.Be2 is the only way to block, and it walks into the finish.
  • 7...Nf3#. The knight checks from f3. The bishop on e2 cannot capture it because it is pinned to the king by the queen on e4. The king has no squares: d1, d2, f1 and f2 hold its own pieces, and e2 is the pinned bishop.

The tactical idea is a smothered mate built on a pin. White's own pieces box in the king, and the only defender of f3 is frozen on the e-file.

The exact moment it goes wrong is 5.Nxf7. White took a second pawn and a fork, but the knight on f7 does nothing for the king. The safer path is to check with the bishop on f7 first and then castle, which takes the g2 pawn out of danger.

The bigger lesson for White is to treat 3...Nd4 with respect but not fear. White does not need to take on e5 at all. Castling or developing keeps the clear edge that the evaluation shows after 3...Nd4.

How White avoids it

White should play Bxf7+ first. After ...Ke7, White castles with O-O, so g2 is no longer a target and the king is safe. Ng4 is another way to keep the queen off g2.

Questions

How does the Blackburne Shilling Gambit trap work?

After 5.Nxf7 Qxg2 the rook on h1 is attacked, and 6.Rf1 lets the queen take e4 with check. 7.Be2 blocks, but the bishop is now pinned to the king by the queen on e4, so 7...Nf3# cannot be answered.

What is the losing move in the Blackburne Shilling Gambit trap?

White's mistake is 5.Nxf7. White should play Bxf7+ first. After ...Ke7, White castles with O-O, so g2 is no longer a target and the king is safe. Ng4 is another way to keep the queen off g2.

Is the Blackburne Shilling Gambit trap worth playing for?

Not against a careful opponent. The evaluation shows 3...Nd4 gives White a clear edge if White simply ignores the e5 pawn, so this is a trap that lives on greed.
