Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play Nc3 and e4 quickly; the engine's top line shows the pawn duo on d5 and e4 holding while Black spends a move on ...e6.
  • h3 is a useful waiting move here, stopping ...Bg4 and ...Ng4 before White's kingside pieces come out.
  • If Black goes ...b5, decline with a3 or take with cxb5 and meet ...a6 calmly, keeping the pawn only if development stays smooth.

Black

  • ...e6 and a later capture on d5 lead to a Modern Benoni, with a queenside pawn majority and the e-file for Black's rooks.
  • ...a6 and ...b5, as in the second engine line, hit c4 at once, and after ...bxc4 the b-file opens for Black.
  • ...g6 and ...Bg7 put the bishop on the long diagonal, where it presses b2 once the center opens.

Plans and pawn structure

Because 3...d6 delays ...e6, White picks the setup. Nc3 and e4 gives a classical center, while Nf3 lines leave Black time for ...b5. In the Benoni version, White uses the extra central space and the e4-e5 push, while Black plays ...a6, ...b5 and puts a rook on e8. In the ...b5 version, Black gives up a pawn or structure for open a- and b-files, and the c4 pawn becomes a target. Each side should finish development before starting pawn play.

How to play against it

As White, take the center with Nc3 and e4 before Black chooses a structure. Avoid slow moves like e3, which let Black play ...e6 and trade on d5 with a comfortable game. If ...b5 comes early, a3 or cxb5 are fine, but do not grab pawns while your king is still in the center.
