Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Push f4 next, as the engine's main line does, aiming for e5 to open the center while Black's king is still on e8.
  • Bb5+ after f4 is a key check: after ...Nfd7 the knight leaves f6, and e5 becomes much easier to play.
  • a4 stops ...b5 for good and keeps Black's queenside majority frozen, so Black has fewer active plans.

Black

  • ...g6 and ...Bg7 put the bishop on the long diagonal, where it eyes c3, b2 and the e5 square.
  • After short castling, a rook on e8 presses the e4 pawn and makes White's e5 push harder to prepare.
  • ...Qe7 and ...Nbd7 add pressure on e4, and the queen check on h4 in the main line exploits the dark squares loosened by f4.

Plans and pawn structure

This is the classic Benoni structure: White pawn on d5, Black pawns on c5 and d6. White has the central majority and wants e5, often prepared by f4, Nf3 and a rook on e1. Black has the queenside majority and wants ...a6 and ...b5, plus piece play on the dark squares with the g7 bishop. If White's e5 lands safely, the d6 pawn becomes a target. If Black gets ...b5 in with tempo, White's center loses support. The d6 pawn and the c4 square are the long-term points to watch.

Where the engine's main line heads: Benoni structure: White pawn on d5, Black pawns c5 and d6. White has a pawn on d5; Black has c5 and d6 and no e-pawn. White has more space, Black has a queenside majority and an open e-file.

How to play against it

As Black, develop with ...g6, ...Bg7 and short castling, then aim for ...a6 and ...b5. Be careful with an early ...Nbd7 if f4 and e5 are coming, because the f6 knight can be pushed back. After f4 and Bb5+, block with ...Nfd7, as the main engine line does.
