Key ideas for both sides
White
- Take the pawn with 2.fxe5; it is the only move that keeps an edge, and after ...d6, exd6 is the safest capture.
- After 3...Bxd6, play Nf3 at once to cover h4 and stop ...Qh4+ before it starts.
- Then e3, d4 and Be2 finish development; Black's lead lasts only while White's kingside stays loose.
Black
- ...d6 is the gambit follow-up: Black opens the d-file and the bishop's diagonal toward h2 instead of regaining the pawn at once.
- Watch for ...g5 to kick the f3 knight when it is the king's main defender.
- ...Bg4 and ...Nf6 in the main engine line develop with pressure on f3 and the kingside.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a race between development and material. Black has given a pawn for open lines, active bishops and the queen's access to h4. White's job is to cover the dark-square holes with Nf3 and e3, castle short and keep the extra pawn. Black wants ...Nc6, ...Qe7 and long castling or a pawn storm with ...g5 against the knight. If White survives the first ten moves with no new weaknesses, the extra pawn and the half-open f-file count.

How to play against it
As White, take on e5 and meet ...d6 with exd6. After ...Bxd6, never play a move that leaves h4 open, such as Nc3, because ...Qh4+ comes and blocking with g3 runs into a mating attack. Play Nf3 first. Avoid 2.e4, which turns the game into a King's Gambit where Black stands well.
