Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Bb5+ trades Black's light-squared bishop after ...Bd7, and then Ne5 lands on the key outpost.
  • b3 and Bb2 put a bishop on the long diagonal behind f4, pointing at e5 and g7.
  • Ne5 at once, followed by d4, gives White a Stonewall-like grip on e5, as the third engine line shows.

Black

  • ...g6 and ...Bg7 fianchetto against White's Bb2, contesting the long diagonal and covering e5.
  • Meet Ne5 with ...Qc7 or ...Nc6, hitting the knight and preparing ...e6.
  • Keep the c5 and d5 pawns side by side and finish development with ...Nc6 and short castling.

Plans and pawn structure

White's play is all about e5: a knight there, backed by f4, d3 or d4, and a bishop on b2. Trading the light-squared bishops with Bb5+ removes a defender of e4 and makes Ne5 stronger. Black wants to keep the center pawns on c5 and d5, finish development, and later push ...d4 or ...c4 to gain space. If White plays d4, the game becomes a reversed Stonewall where Black aims for ...Bf5 and pressure on e4.

How to play against it

As White, avoid passive setups that let Black push ...d4 and grab the center. Bb5+ followed by Ne5 is the most direct plan. Be careful with d4 too early: it leaves e4 as a permanent hole for Black's knight.
