Key ideas for both sides
White
- Be2, O-O and Be3 give a solid base, with d4 protected by pieces as well as the c-pawn option.
- After ...Qb6 and ...Qxb2, the engine line shows c4 to open lines for the extra development.
- Nbd2 and c4 strike at d5 when Black is slow, as in the second engine line.
Black
- 4...e6 and 5...c5 attack d4 right away, with ...Qb6 also hitting b2.
- ...a6 and ...Bg6 keep the bishop safe from Nh4 tricks and prepare a later ...c5.
- ...Nd7 and ...Ne7 develop the knights without blocking the f-pawn, keeping ...f6 in reserve.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a strategic fight over the d4 square. White wants pieces to protect d4 and e5, then expands with c3 or c4 and plays on the side where Black's king is not. Black aims ...c5 and ...Nc6 at d4, with the queen on b6 hitting b2. If Black grabs b2, White gets development and open lines with c4. If Black's pressure on d4 gets nowhere, White's space tells.
Where the engine's main line heads: French chain: d4–e5 against d5–e6. The French chain: White's pawns on d4 and e5 face Black's on d5 and e6. White has kingside space, Black attacks the base of the chain.
