Key ideas for both sides
White
- Against 3...Bf5, the engine likes Nd2 and Nb3, keeping the c-pawn free and eyeing c5.
- Nf3, Be2 and short castling is a calm setup; c3 or c4 then supports d4 or challenges d5.
- Against 3...c5, Nf3 and an exchange on d4 with Qxd4 lead to open play where White's queen is active.
Black
- 3...Bf5 develops the bishop before ...e6 locks it in, then ...e6, ...Nd7 and ...c5 follow.
- 3...c5 hits d4 at once, using the c-pawn twice to open the position early.
- ...Qc7 or ...Qb6 adds pressure on e5, or on d4 and b2.
Plans and pawn structure
The structure is a French chain, d4 and e5 against d5 and e6, but Black's light-squared bishop sits outside on f5 or g6. White plays for kingside space with Nf3, Be2 and castling, or with g4 and h4 to chase the bishop. Black's main break is ...c5, backed by ...Nc6 and ...Qb6, and sometimes ...f6 against e5. Trading the light-squared bishops usually helps Black.
Where the engine's main line heads: French chain: d4–e5 against d5–e6. The French chain: White's pawns on d4 and e5 face Black's on d5 and e6. White has kingside space, Black attacks the base of the chain.
